Beyond its visually appealing yogurt, The Kettle Black also serves superb burrata, impeccably cooked eggs, and coffee.

Sometimes it's best to ignore Public Enemy and instead believe the buzz. The Kettle Black is the most talked-about cafe in Melbourne, yet there aren't many that are more deserving of the hype and the line that forms here every day in South Melbourne.

The group has experience, having worked at Top Paddock in Richmond and Two Birds One Stone in South Yarra. However, their offering is most comprehensive here, on a terrace that has been transformed and is listed as a historic building.

This menu exudes elegance at every step, from the most popular breakfast on Instagram in 2014 (homemade coconut yogurt adorned with nuts, grains, seeds, and flowers) to the Cape Grim beef served on a black bun. Produce is carefully chosen and prepared, whether it's a simple dish of burrata and tomato that's just wonderful or fluffy scrambled eggs mixed through feta and topped with air-cured wallaby that's soft, subtle, and delectable. Next, there's the brunch-lunch winner, which is tataki ocean fish topped with pickled daikon, toasted hazelnuts, almonds, and petals, all accompanied by greens. It's among Melbourne's greatest cafe meals, served with two flawlessly poached eggs.

Expect to find beautifully brewed coffee, ranging from the house blend from 5 Senses to a rotating selection of single origin beans, and tipples with commendably low booze miles. The staff is well-mannered and offers a refreshing lack of attitude, all wrapped up in fashionable yet understated surroundings.

One of the greatest is The Kettle Black, as we are naming it. Get in line; it will be worthwhile.
